HSA Requirements:

  • Must have a High Deductible Heath Plan (HDHP)
    • Single Coverage: The annual deductible must be at least $1,200 and the out of pocket cap cannot exceed $5,900
    • Family Coverage: The annual deductible must be at least $2,400 and the out of pocket cap cannot exceed $11,900
  • Can’t be enrolled in Medicare
  • Can’t be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return
  • Can’t be covered under another non-HDHP
  • Only one person can be an owner on the account, you can have beneficiaries on the account

HSA Benefits:

  • Tax Deduction
    • Money deposited in a HSA is deducted from your income for your federal tax purposes, up to $3,050 a year for an individual and $6,150 for couples - each spouse must set up his or her own HSA
  • Insurance Benefits
    • Insurance Provider can be changed as needed by the account holder
    • The account holder spends up to the deductible amount from the HSA, then relies on the insurance coverage to pay medical expenses
  • Flexibility
    • HSA’s are set up by banks that give you an option on how the money is managed. Can be an interest-bearing savings account or an investment account
  • Portability
    • The HSA can remain open and funded when you switch employers or if you begin a period of self-employment
